Sam Porritt discusses the ideas around his current solo show ‘A Certain Change’ and his multifaceted practice in sculpture, drawing, text, and, more recently, performance at VITRINE, Basel. The event marks the finassage of the exhibition and is presented as an in conversation with Alys Williams (Curator and VITRINE Founding Director) and visitors. This is opportunity to see the show, hear the artist discuss his work, and engage in a discussion with artist and gallery over a glass of wine.
‘A Certain Change’ presents new works made with the space in mind and explores ideas of limitlessness and directionality. The centre piece of the exhibition is a sculpture of a lighthouse. Human in scale, the work will turn in its entirety as it casts out a light, the moving beam of light falling on interior walls and out into the surrounding public space.
“Without explicitly referring to the role that the sea plays in current political debates and humanitarian concerns, Porritt touches on the moral discontent that is part and parcel of aesthetic distance as the foundation of art.” - Maja Naef review, Artforum, December 2018.
